On Friday 19th associate Remyhs Baker and senior associate Kiren Dhillon headed to Brighton for the weekend. Not for the sunshine and sea but to attend a national conference of family lawyers, all members of the nationally recognised organisation Resolution.
Resolution is a community of likeminded professionals all working in family law. Resolution lawyers commit themselves to resolving cases in a constructive way for the best of their clients. We at Pinney Talfourd believe this is an important ethos and we have enshrined it as every lawyer in the Family team are resolution members.
The conference included a keynote address by the President of the Family Division Sir Andrew McFarlane, President of the Family Division and Barbara Mill KC, both trailblazers in family law. Key points highlighted by both of them was the need for solicitors to focus on alternative dispute resolution. This is where we look at alternatives to court processes. The focus was looking to the future, being innovative and considerate of our clients. She said “we must embrace change. It is good for us and good for the families we serve…we must make an effort to conclude cases outside of [the] court arena.” Most cases that our family team deal with never end with court litigation. Most are settled through negotiations.
Kiren and Remyhs attended detailed case update on cases involving children and finances and are to feed back to the team. Continued training ensures our solicitors are prepared to represent you well in your cases and guide you to a resolution.
Topics discussed included the recent changes to capital gains tax (CGT) rules, changes to marriage laws, the need for greater diversity in the legal profession and how to effectively run TOLATA cases.
